Geographic information
Mediterranean region
Population: 590 million
Basin area: 2 Million Km2
Description
Besides being the birthplace of important civilizations and cultures, the Mediterranean basin is also one of the global biodiversity hotspots and a bioclimatic region with unique seasonal and interannual variabilities worldwide. However, over the last decades, it has experienced rapid demography growth, severe water shortage, increasing anthropogenic pressures, and alarming effects of climate change on natural resources, biodiversity, and human wellbeing. This results in intensified water demand through increased irrigation and water consumption, severely threatening socio-economic stability and impacting ecosystem integrity. In alignment with this challenge and scope of PRIMA objectives on water management, OurMED project was designed to respond to the urgent need for more comprehensive management of water storage and distribution in the Mediterranean region, considering the natural ecosystems, as Nature-based Solutions, and engineered infrastructure over the short and long-term horizons. Besides the local scale demo site, particular focus will be made on the Mediterranean, where water and environmental policies and directives are considered at both national and regional scales. The MED Demo Site covers a large area, with a population of approximately 590 million people, and experiences a Mediterranean climate.
