Teaching Transient Groundwater Flow Modeling in a Confined Aquifer with Excel and ChatGPT

This paper extends our previous work on spreadsheet-based steady-state groundwater flow modeling to include transient conditions. Using a step-by-step Excel implementation, a numerical solution for transient groundwater flow in a confined aquifer is presented, highlighting the spreadsheet’s educational value in understanding complex groundwater flow phenomena. Implementing transient flow in an easy-to-visualize and interactive way in Excel was not trivial and required the use of macros created with Visual Basic for Applications. Although the actions of the macros were simple to describe, their implementation was challenging. For this reason, we used ChatGPT as a coding companion, which provided the code after being provided with carefully designed prompts

Technical note: Image processing for continuous river turbidity monitoring – full-scale tests and potential applications

The development of continuous river turbidity monitoring systems is essential since this is a critical water quality metric linked to the presence of organic and inorganic suspended matter. Current monitoring practices are mainly limited by low spatial and temporal resolutions and costs. This results in the huge challenge of providing extensive and timely water quality monitoring at the global scale.

Responses of Wetted River Network Contraction and Expansion Dynamics to Prolonged Drought

This study uses a coupled hydrological model (mHM + MODFLOW) to simulate the evolution of the active river network in Germany’s Bode catchment (2000–2022), focusing on the 2018–2022 drought. This contraction has significant impacts on water resources, ecosystems, and water quality.

Simulation and optimization of the Agia aquifer in Crete

The paper presents a numerical simulation and optimization of the Agia aquifer in Crete, aiming to maximize groundwater extraction while minimizing pumping costs using the Princeton Transport Code and Gurobi solver. The model, calibrated with real data from 2017 to 2021, incorporates hydraulic and economic constraints for both dry and wet seasonal scenarios.

Exploring the Transferability of Image-based algorithms for River Plastic Detection: The Value of Small Mix Datasets

This study demonstrates that using a small, diverse Mix dataset (999 images) improves transferability, reduces costs, and optimizes floating macroplastic detection with YOLOv7 and YOLOv8, highlighting that dataset quality and heterogeneity are critical for global-scale detection.

A Unified Open-Source Metabase Design for Hydro-meteorological Data Descriptive Analysis

This study presents an open-source SQL platform integrated with Metabase to unify and visualize hydrometeorological data in Crete. It improves data access, supports decision-making on water risks, and encourages collaboration between public and private weather stations.
